Cathedral of Saint Augustine in Bridgeport Rededicated After One Year of Restoration. (December 2, 2003) The following are auotes from an article by Joseph McAleer in the January edition of the Fairfield County Catholic:

"During a solemn Mass filled with ritual, ceremony, and music, the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, rededicated the Cathedral of Saint Augustine following more than a year of restoration and renewal. The December 2 Mass was celebrated on the 50th anniversary of the installation of the first bishop of the newly-created Diocese of Bridgeport, Laurence Cardinal Shehan, in 1953, in the very same cathedral. Bishop William E. Lori and 12 other bishops from around New England and New York concelebrated, in the presence of the former bishop of Bridgeport, Edward Cardinal Egan of New York, and William Cardinal Keeler of Baltimore, who represented Cardinal Sheehan's home diocese. Two-hundred priests and deacons joined representatives from all 87 parishes in the diocese. "

"Archbishop Daniel A. Cronin, Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Hartford, delivered the homily." He finished the homily with the words of the patron saint of the diocese, Saint Augustine: "We are gathered together to celebrate the dedication of a house of prayer. This is our house of prayer, but we, too, are a house of God. If we are a house of God, its construction goes on in time so that it may be dedicated at the end of time."

"Over the past year, Saint Augustine's has been restored to its original Gothic splendor while expanding the seating capacity to 750. The multi-ethnic parish never closed, working around the construction to celebrate Mass and bring the sacraments to 1,300 families. Funding for the $ 3.75 million renovation was obtained through private donations. 'I hope the renewed Saint Augustine's will help to enrich the faith and continue to be a beacon of hope for the parish, the people of Bridgeport, and beyond,' says Bishop Lori."
